A handsome salt-glazed stein by Marzi & Remy of Höhr-Grenzhausen, in Germany’s Westerwald heartland.

The tapering body is richly moulded with foliate panels picked out in deep cobalt against the classic pebble-textured grey ground, capped with a domed pewter lid and thumb-lift.

It’s a superb example of the region’s centuries-old stoneware tradition - robust, decorative, and made for celebration. Display it with other German ceramics, use it for an occasional pour, or gift it to the stein collector in your life.

Origin & Maker

Marzi & Remy (M&R) sprang to life in 1879 in Höhr-Grenzhausen, the heart of Germany’s Westerwald stoneware district.

Founded by Anton Marzi and Simon Peter Remy, the firm became renowned for finely moulded salt-glazed stoneware, richly decorated beer steins, and characterful art pottery that moved gracefully from historicist styles into Jugendstil and later modernist tastes.

For over a century, M&R balanced craftsmanship with lively, often crisply relief-moulded designs - pieces made to be handled, used, and loved.

The company closed in the 1990s, but its work remains a touchstone for collectors who cherish quality German stoneware with soul.
